NEWSLETTER  |   JANUARY 2009
Everyone loves to go to the collection conferences. They can be in Las Vegas, Palm Desert, Hollywood, Florida or New Orleans. One thing will always stay the same, the need to party and to "Do Business". The collection industry parties harder than most industries put together. We work hard and play even harder. Many of us work twelve to fifteen hours a day and need the down time to recover. We require the best restaurants like the Kraft steakhouse in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the best bar like Tryst at the Wynn and the best skin bar like the Spearmint Rhino off the Vegas strip. Did I stay strip? Interesting how all of the locations I mentioned were in Las Vegas the home of the collection conferences.

I don't think that there is a city in the United States that can rival Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada and the release it provides for the collection industry. There are times more than one industry conference is in Las Vegas and that always makes for an interesting time.

Then there is the American Collectors Association, the parent of the collection industry who always has top conferences. The ACA conferences are always the pinnacle of the collections educational and legislative arenas, while the Debt Buyers Association conferences runs a close second and the Credit and Collections News conferences gets my vote as the most interesting and uncommon conferences in the industry. Although I still attend some of the Source Media Credit Risk conferences, unfortunately, I and others have seen a decline at the Credit Risk conferences in attendees and vendors over the past few years and really don't understand the reason for it.

There are times that I attend conferences and don't see the people I know in the actual conference halls, but only to see them at the parties at 4am. I along with friends and business associates sometimes find ourselves sitting in the hotel lobbies at 7 am with a beer still in one hand, while conference attendees are coming down from their rooms with orange juice and new clothing for a new day.

All in all the conferences provide a wealth of lead sources and the ability to "Do Business" face to face with some of the top premier groups and collection executives in the industry. If you have not attended a collection conference I highly recommend that you do so. They're exciting, educational and a lot of fun.

Whether or not you find yourself at a collection conference who's main bar closes at 11 pm or at a conference where half naked young women in their young twenties are being chased by hotel security through the hotel because they pulled the fire alarm, it'll always be a story to tell and the reason you go to the next conference. See you all at the upcoming Debt Buyers Association conference, which is enjoyable, entertaining and enriching.
